Although it is one of the most famous and most visited national parks in the United States, the Grand Canyon in Arizona still holds some surprises.

Do you know its age?
For a long time, it was believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon around 6 million years ago. However, a 2012 study suggests that the process actually started 70 million years ago!

The Grand Canyon has its own microclimate.
The coldest and wettest place is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the north rim, while the hottest and also one of the driest is located about 12 kilometers from Phantom Ranch.

It is not the deepest canyon in the world.
The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet reaches a depth of 5,354 meters, while the one in Arizona is « only » 1,857 meters deep!

There are no dinosaur bones in the Grand Canyon.

But there are many other fossils.

Fish are rare in the Grand Canyon.

There’s a town hidden in the Grand Canyon.
The village of Supai is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, in the Havasupai Indian Reservation.
