Known for its wineries, German heritage and rolling Hill Country landscapes, Fredericksburg has also emerged as a premier stargazing destination, celebrated for its exceptionally dark skies and commitment to night-sky preservation.
Designated an International Dark Sky Community in 2020, the city is home to two Dark Sky Parks and carefully manages light pollution through local ordinances and monitoring. For over 20 years, NASA has partnered with Fredericksburg schools through the SystemsGo programme, where students design and launch experimental rockets with guidance from NASA engineers, including collaborations with Johnson and Marshall Space Flight Centres.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park offer some of the darkest skies in Texas, with ranger-led night programmes, star parties and guided hikes.
By day, Fredericksburg’s acclaimed wineries set the scene; by night, wine tastings give way to constellations, proving that in the Hill Country, the best views begin after dark.
