Every New England state offers visitors the chance to experience top-notch art museums, including some that have achieved international acclaim, in addition to artistic hidden gems.

From Boston’s venerable Museum of Fine Arts to Connecticut’s collaborative American Mural Project, there is plenty to view, experience and be inspired by.

Explore Vermont’s Bennington Museum, serving up equal parts art and history with an impressive collection of Revolutionary War artifacts. Witness a (literal) mountain of artwork at the Andres Institute of Art in New Hampshire, located on Big Bear Mountain in Brookline.

Maine’s Ogunquit Museum of American Art showcases the legacies of the numerous Ogunquit Art Colony figures that flourished there, in addition to significant American art from the late 19th century to present day.

In Rhode Island, visitors can ponder the wonder of history, architecture, art and social commentary at the National Museum of American Illustration, located inside a circa-1900 American Renaissance mansion called Vernon Court. There’s much more for art enthusiasts to discover here.
