The iconic Tupelo Hardware Company, famously known as the store where Gladys Presley bought Elvis his very first guitar in 1946, closed its doors on December 31. For nearly a century, this historic site operated by the Booth family, continued to function as a local hardware store while welcoming visitors from around the world.
Following the announcement of the end of its commercial activity by its long-time owners, the City of Tupelo decided to acquire the property in order to preserve this important piece of local heritage and ensure continued public access. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to protecting a key chapter in the history of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
Although Tupelo Hardware Company is no longer operating as a retail store as of January 1, 2026, the address at 114 West Main Street remains a must-see stop for Elvis fans visiting Mississippi. Visits must now be arranged through the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau, which is the main point of contact for organizing tours of the site.
Located in the heart of downtown Tupelo, the Tupelo Hardware Company is an integral part of the “Elvis’ Tupelo Driving Tour”, alongside the Elvis Presley Birthplace, Johnnie’s Drive-In, and eleven other iconic locations making it a valuable addition to itineraries focused on music, culture, and the American South.
