Baton Rouge is home to Louisiana State University (LSU) and Southern University, both of which have dedicated fanbases for their American football teams.

In this city, it’s not just about the game, though. Fans start celebrating the games hours before kickoff takes place through a beloved tradition known as tailgating.

Before a big game, fans first gather on the campus grounds at LSU and Southern in their canopies, buses, tents and on the back of their vehicles to fuel up on jambalaya, fried seafood, boudin, and other Cajun cuisine.

There is no such thing as meeting a stranger when tailgating. These groups welcome friends, family, and even fans of the opposing team to stop by for a plate of food and great conversation, so don’t be shy!

Get excited for the game with performances by the nationally recognized Human Jukebox marching band at Southern or catch the Golden Band from Tigerland march down LSU’s Victory Hill into Tiger Stadium.

Enjoy the scenic views of LSU’s Italian Renaissance academic buildings or the Mississippi River at Southern’s “The Bluffs.” Sports fan or not, you don’t want to miss game day in Baton Rouge!
