Stretching across a vast expanse of rugged mountains and pristine wilderness, the Sierra Nevada forms one of the longest protected natural corridors in the United States, encompassing 18 national forests. Here are a few highlights worth exploring:

Sierra National Forest : Lace up your hiking boots and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Merced River Trail, where gentle waters and forested paths await. For a taste of local history, hop aboard the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad and enjoy a nostalgic steam train ride through the pines.

Sequoia National Forest: Spanning over 445,000 hectares, this forest is home to six wilderness areas and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Bring a picnic and take the Trail of 100 Giants, a paved 1.3-mile loop offering close-up views of towering sequoias, some estimated to be up to 1,500 years old.

Inyo National Forest: Sculpted by ancient glaciers and volcanic forces, Inyo showcases dramatic geology. Visit Devils Postpile National Monument to see stunning basalt columns along a 1.2-mile trail. Farther south, the Buttermilks reveal glacial remnants, while Mono Lake in the north features surreal tufa towers shaped by ancient volcanic activity.
