Kentucky is home to 30 state certified Trail Towns. These towns are selected due to their proximity to some of the Bluegrass State’s most breathtaking natural trails, rivers and lakes. Leitchfield, which was added to the list in late 2024, is unique as it sits midway between two popular central Kentucky State Parks: Nolin Lake State Park and Rough River Dam State Resort Park.
Both parks offer exciting lake-based recreation and paddling opportunities in nearby rivers and creeks, along with local favorite restaurants like Farmer’s Feedmill or Hometown Hangout.
Among Kentucky’s lesser-known recreational sites is Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Covering over 123,000 acres of steep gorges and dense forests, it is one of the most popular outdoor playgrounds. Dawson Springs, the first certified Trail Town, is another gem in the heart of western Kentucky.
Located a short drive away from Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, Tradewater River, and Lake Beshear, the city is the perfect spot to enjoy the many activities the area has to offer: mountain biking, canoeing, paddleboarding, motorized water sports, boating, and swimming.
