Kartchner Caverns State Park
Located near Benson, less than an hour south-east of Tucson, several guided tours are offered in the beautiful limestone cave of Kartchner Caverns State Park year-round.
In 2017, Kartchner Caverns State Park was also designated « Dark Sky Park », for star-gazing. Besides caverns, the park has cabins for rent along with three hiking trails.
Emerald Cave
The opportunity to kayak into a cave with emerald water below is a one-of-a-kind experience travelers can enjoy at Emerald Cave. Paddle along the clear water surrounded by towering canyon walls while on the Black Canyon Water Trail, a popular stop on the Colorado River.
Lava River Cave
A hidden gem in the middle of the Coconino National Forest, the Lava River Cave was created from lava that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie, leaving stone icicles hanging from the ceiling. In keeping with a volcano theme, after trekking through the cave visit the above-ground Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
