In Palm Springs, the vintage culture and the architectural style known as « Mid Century Modern » is a journey in itself.
Located in the Coachella Valley, two hours from LA, Palm Springs was the refuge of many Hollywood stars of the time who longed to find a haven of peace far from the studios. They were seduced and had their designer second homes built there. At the time, they called on the most famous architects.
The relationship to landscape and nature often governs architectural design and all architects are all immersed in the surrounding desert nature. Their style is also referred to as « desert modernism ».
The not-to-be-missed event: The “Modernism Week” festival, which brings lovers of mid-20th century architecture and design together in Palm Springs every year. For 10 days in February, vintage culture and the so-called « Mid Century Modern » architectural style are honored.
Do not miss its essentials:
The Museum of Art & Center for Design and Architecture
Guided tours of mid-century modern neighborhoods and villas
A visit to Sunnylands Garden & Center
And nothing better than staying in a mythical hotel such as the Orbit In, a real retro experience!
