An hour and a half drive southeast of Charleston, New River Gorge National Park is best known for its whitewater rafting courses.

The New River is a whitewater river with rugged terrain, flowing north through deep canyons. It is one of the oldest rivers on the continent. The national park encompasses over 280 square kilometers of land along the New River, is rich in cultural and natural history, and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy zip lines, climbing and rappelling, fishing, hiking, biking, extreme jumping from the 267-meter high New River Gorge Bridge, or crossing the Bridge Walk, a footbridge located just below.

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most photographed places in West Virginia and was chosen to represent the state on the 25-cent coin.

In 2013, the National Park Service listed the New River Gorge Bridge on the National Register of Historic Places.
